Ahoy Mythopoeians!
Summer is here and nearly half over. I spent the first month traveling to various shows, spending time at both Origins Game Fair and American Library Association 2025. The latter in particular was very invigorating, but traveling on the road has made it more difficult to be consistent with writing, and updating this blog!
That’s not to say there hasn’t been work done. Currently, we’re working on the second revision of the Glow #7 Lettering. The issue is really coming together and I think the lettering phase is proving to be extremely satisfying. I’m always quite critical of my own work, so it’s nice feeling that the issue is going to be a great one. The most progress is always made between the first lettering draft and second. For some reason, it’s very important for us to see words on the page - that first look helps anchor when things feel right or don’t, and from there usually it’s a matter of finesse to get the pacing and tone just right.
That said, the biggest drastic improvement in draft usually takes place in the same work period. By the second lettering draft, things usually feel pretty good. We’re grinding hard to at least get preview copies ready for San Diego Comic-Con in a few weeks, but it will be tight…
Speaking of SDCC! We will be back again this year at Booth 5532, same as last year. I was hoping to perhaps snag a corner booth this year, but alas that plan will have to wait! Nonetheless, we’re definitely going to revise our booth this year to hopefully make things nice and flowly.
We have a big special guest this year! Bryan Valenza of Marvel Comics fame will be joining us, promoting the Bandits of Batavia which we are co-publishing with him in the west. Stop by and get your Bandits of Batavia, Glow, and Skies of Fire comics signed by him!
Even though I haven’t gotten as much writing as I would like done these past few weeks, I am still extremely energized about where we’re going with the series! I’ve been re-reading through my paper journal entries on Glow and I’m going to end today by transcribing one of them here…
The Splendor of Nym
The cities of Nym were splendid in their majesty - white, beige, and blue, spires of glass and stone, intricate patterns of fillament and the most wondrous fauna, magically enhanced to grow bright blues and violents and yellows. The cities grew outwards in concentric rings, ever expanding as the abundance of resources provided for an ever growing utopia.
At its highest, the Art of Nym was unmatched. Elaborate choruses would weave tapestries of song that would lift stone and crystal en masse, while the runesmiths refined their words into ever smaller, ever more intricate devices.
Though Nymerans spoke in reverance of nature and the world around them, the truth was that their working of the weave was slowly degrading the very balance of Aod’s core. What is taken must eventually be given…
The true folly came when the highest magisters attempted to become gods unto themselves. By linking the Towers, enough anima would be channeled for a portal to be opened into the energetic field of Akash underlying all reality. From that dimension, one would be able to see all, be all, and in this potential came the obssession of a society indolent on abundance, corrupt and self-serving from the inside out.
